Fostering Inclusion, Equity, and Latitudinal Diversity (FIELD) |
Field research is a crucial pressure point for addressing a lack of diversity in biology — it can be either an avenue for deep connection and sense of belonging in the biological sciences, or an alienating experience that imposes extra barriers to folks from marginalized groups. In 2020, I co-founded the website FIELD Perspectives, which aims to promote safe, inclusive, and diverse field research by bringing awareness to identity-linked challenges associated with field work, and to diversify the representation of field researchers in the public sphere.
In 2016, I co-founded Biology on Tap, a monthly science pub night focused on scientific outreach for adults. For most people, there are far fewer ways to learn new things once they graduate from college, and we aim to both entertain and educate our audiences. Each month we present two scientific talks on a theme in biology to an audience of ~100 people in Lansing, MI.
